Maddox was born to essentially be enslaved to Madam Mim. She had him only so she would have someone to control, manipulate and use. She also carved and tattooed runes into his skin in the hopes of tapping into an ancient form of magic, a cruel and volatile one, that wouldn't be blocked on the Isle. His life was not a happy one, locked up inside 24/7 and unable to interact with anyone other than her, Maddox didn't know or understand anything about the outside world until he was fifteen, wherein Mim getting sick allowed him to sneak out and get away. He instantly hated the way people looked at him, and resented practically everyone. By the time he left the Isle he was a massive asshole to everyone around him, lashing out constantly and pushing away anyone who tried to get close.
